We offer two diplomas for the Psychotherapy Program: a Foundational Diploma and a Clinical Diploma. The requirements for each are outlined below.

Foundational Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice

The Foundational Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice is awarded to those students who have completed all required courses and seminars of the three-year program, and met the following requirements:

  • completion of 200 hours of supervised psychotherapy with clients
  • completion of 100 supervision hours
  • completion of one case study of a psychotherapy client
  • completion of 120 hours of personal psychotherapy

Clinical Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice

The Clinical Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice is awarded to those students who have met the following requirements:

  • attainment of the Foundational Diploma
  • completion of an additional 250 hours of supervised psychotherapy
  • completion of an additional 50 supervision hours

The Clinical phase of the program has no set timeframe. The length of time it takes to complete this phase depends on how long it takes the student to acquire the additional client contact and supervision hours.

Becoming a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario

It is the goal of the training program to provide a thorough training that instills the competencies required by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) to become a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario. In addition to sound training, there are other specific requirements for becoming Registered Psychotherapists. Detailed information about the registration process is available online at the CRPO website.

It should be noted that after attaining the Foundational Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice, the student is considered ready to apply to become a Qualifying Member of the College. After acceptance by the College as a Qualifying Member, students must bring their total number of contact hours of psychotherapy practice up to a minimum of 450 and the total number of supervision hours up to a minimum of 100 in order to be eligible to apply for registration as a Psychotherapist.

As an alternative, after attaining the Foundational Diploma, the student may elect to remain a student in the program with a view to attaining the Clinical Diploma in Psychotherapy Practice, and within that program, complete the full number of contact hours and supervision hours needed to be eligible to apply to the College as a Registered Psychotherapist.
